Suffolk is a fantastic place to visit in the lead up to Christmas and offers many memorable events to mark the season throughout November and December. There are a number of markets and fayres to visit across the county, giving visitors the chance to purchase unique gifts and sample some wintery delights.
One of the most stunning markets can be found in Lavenham. The medieval town is the perfect setting for a special Christmas Fair. It is home to over 300 buildings that are considered to be of historic significance, including numerous half timber houses. These look incredible in the winter, especially if there is a sprinkling of snow. The fair will take place on the 4th – 6th December.
If you want to take a look back in time to find out how people celebrated Christmas during the Dickensian period you should visit Kentwell Hall this December. They will be hosting their annual Magical Christmas on the 12th, 13th, 19th and 20th. Visitors will have all kinds of great things to see and do when the whole house opens, including seeing how the ladies of the house entertained in the drawing room and how the kitchen functioned.
Kentwell’s Magical Christmas will feature a special reading of Charles Dickens’ famous work A Christmas Carol. The story is brought to life and is sure to be one of the highlights of the event.
Visitors can also get hands on during their visit and make their own Christmas decorations. In the Victorian period this was very common because they were not sold like they are today. You’ll be able to try your hand at making all kinds of traditional decorations with expert guidance the whole way. You can even make a wreath to hang on your front door.
If you’re planning on attending either of these amazing events you should consider topping off your trip by staying overnight at The Gatehouse Hotel near Ipswich. We are well located, under 50 minutes drive from both Lavenham and Kentwell House. We offer high quality accommodation and welcome guests warmly.
